CBSO Podcast Extra April 2008

This month Special guest Colin Currie is one of the world's finest percussionists and in May he premieres a new concerto by Simon Holt, "A Table of Noises". Colin talks about the concerto, about being the first percussionist to reach the concerto final of BBC Young Musician of the Year in 1994, and about his passion for new music. Stephen Johnson talks about Mahler's 5th Symphony, the composer's most popular purely-instrumental work, which dominates the CBSO schedule in the second half of April. And in the PodGuide to the Orchestra we go behind the scenes and talk to Orchestra Manager Ben Noakes about what it's like to have to deal with the demands, quirks and forgetfulness of 90 professional musicians and the odd conductor. Competition In this month's competition there's a chance to win a pair of tickets to hear Colin Currie premiere Simon Holt's new percussion concerto. The concert is on May 14th at Symphony Hall in Birmingham; Martyn Brabbins conducts and also on the programme is Rimsky-Korsakov's Golden Cockerel suite and Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances.
