(Note/update/correction: Looks like you can install Mac App store purchased apps on as many Macs as you want as long as those Macs are used for non-comercial purposes. A clearer answer as to why previously installed apps don't appear as installed in MAS - The App Store checks for products by their internal application identifier (the “bundle ID”) and the version number.
