The American Entrepreneur featuring Howard Dahl
Updated: 2011-05-02 19:08:41
Description: How Economic Turmoil Created Entrepreneurial Opportunity: Howard Dahl Guests: Howard Dahl, David Marcks, Ben Heywood The collapse of the Soviet Union brought a taste of freedom for millions of Russians. But with this monumental change came political and economic turmoil. For Howard Dahl, CEO of Amity Technology, the collapse brought entrepreneurial opportunity. Dahl was one of the first American entrepreneurs to venture into Russia after the downfall of the Soviet Union. The result: A whole, new market was born for his North Dakota-based farm equipment company. Amity still operates in Russia, and he'll talk with The American Entrepreneur, Ron Morris, about his experiences, and his front-row-seat view on the opportunities and widespread blight that post-Communist Russia has spawned. Also on the Show: The Impact of One Family's Tragedy on 100,000 Lives: Ben Heywood, Founder of PatientsLikeMe.com When Stephen Heywood was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) - Lou Gehrig's disease - at the age of 29, the Heywood family responded with sadness, grief, and in the case of his brothers Ben and Jamie, action. Jamie joined the fight to find a cure for ALS. Ben put his professional medical, technological, and media expertise to work. He created PatientsLikeMe.com, a repository for patients and doctors to find out more about diseases that change our lives. Through anecdotal and data-point analysis, patients afflicted with a life-altering disease can see how others face the same condition and cope, physically and emotionally. Doctors who treat patients with these diseases can assess the most effective treatment options for them. Ben Heywood joins The American Entrepreneur, Ron Morris, to discuss the concept of PatientsLikeMe.com, and how, even though his brother, Stephen, has passed on, he helps his spirit live on through the business, and over 100,000 patients are better informed as a result. The Dog that Created a Multi-Million Dollar Enterprise: David Marcks, Founder of Geese Police When he worked at a golf course in Grennwich, Connecticut in 1986, David Marcks faced a recurring problem: geese. Hundreds of them. Their presence gave the course a natural feel, but their droppings irritated golfers. David and his staff tried everything to get rid of the geese without success. That's when they called on man's best friend, David's Border Collie, to solve the problem with ease, and without harm to the geese. Word got out about David's methodology and Geese Police was born. Since then, David's company has grown into a multi-million-dollar enterprise with locations throughout the country. The scope of his business has grown from golf courses to town parks, corporate properties, and even front lawns. David joins The American Entrepreneur, Ron Morris, to tell how a learned knowledge of instinctive animal behavior led to his business success.
